By around 494 CE though, the Christian Church had appropriated this fertility rite as the Feast of Purification. Later on, February 14th was celebrated as the Feast of St. Valentine, honouring one or two early saints named Valentinus. Valentines Day was first associated with romantic love in 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love started to flourish. In 18th century, it evolved into an occasion for lovers to present flowers, confectionary and greeting cards to each other. Since the 19th century, mass produced greeting cards had stepped onto the scene. Recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance, this day is celebrated across the globe with gifts of chocolates, flowers, jewellery and romantic dinners.
